About Four Mile:

Four Mile Historic Park is a gateway to Denver’s Western heritage, offering a vibrant 12-acre oasis with a working farm and Denver’s oldest standing structure, the Four Mile House Museum. The museum houses an extensive collection of mid to late-1800s Western artifacts, serving educational, historical, curatorial, and research purposes. Proudly acting as a custodian of cultural treasures, the museum evolves with contemporary approaches to artifact interaction, aspiring to be an immersive cultural attraction that goes beyond traditional museum settings. Visitors actively participate in a dynamic experience that brings history to life.

The Park is a hub of cultural and outdoor exploration, offering a diverse array of educational programs centered around Colorado history. Guided tours of the iconic Four Mile House, field trips, and outreach programs provide an immersive journey into the past, allowing visitors to connect with the heritage that has shaped Denver.

Job Description:

Join our team at Four Mile Historic Park! We are currently seeking a Program Specialist for part-time employment, offering up to 20-30 hours per week. Flexibility is key, as some night and weekend availability is required to make Park programming available during both public and private events.

The ideal candidate will embody qualities including self-motivation, friendliness, and a knack for creative problem-solving while delivering exceptional customer service. Collaborating with the Education Coordinator, the Program Specialist will be pivotal in facilitating educational programs for field trips, outreach initiatives, birthday celebrations, and private events. Additionally, they will contribute to enhancing the overall guest experience.

This is a part-time, non-exempt position through October 31, 2024 with the potential to join the team full-time for the right candidate. This is not a remote position; in-person attendance is required. 

Education Department (primary duties):

  • Lead or assist hands-on educational activities for all ages, both at the Park and at schools across the metro area, mileage reimbursement available for off-site programs
  • Complete program set-up and clean-up tasks in an efficient manner
  • Help maintain areas and materials used in programs
  • Interact with people of all ages as an ambassador of Four Mile Historic Park while in Park-provided period costume or Four Mile Historic Park apron.
  • Actively participates in monthly education staff meetings and reports on programs
  • Participate in ongoing training to provide high-quality programming in alignment with state standards and current best practices in interpretative education
  • Promotes Park programming at educator fairs and other community events
  • Provide assistance with administrative work as needed, such as sending program confirmations to groups and reaching out to new schools
  • Other related duties as required or as assigned  

Park Programming and Visitor Services (secondary duties):

  • Be a welcoming and professional resource within Four Mile Historic Park Museum to answer questions and orient visitors to the House Museum
  • Take on support roles during special daytime, evening, and weekend events
  • Manage front desk operations during general admission hours and for special events
  • Provide excellent customer service and serve as the organization’s first point of contact in person, over the phone, and online
  • Process admission and gift shop sales
  • Ensure front desk, lobby, and gift shop are tidy and welcoming, providing for good visitor flow and experience
  • Implement appropriate procedures when needed in response to emergencies
  • Light clean-up of public spaces as needed
  • Work with other departments to maintain and update Park calendar

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of relevant work experience (e.g. youth education, events, summer camps)
  • 1+ years of customer service experience
    • Computer literacy required (PC: Microsoft Suite, Google Workspace, internet, ability to learn internal CRM tools)
  • Knowledge of visitor services principles, practices, and procedures
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong follow-through with a high level of organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to articulate the mission of Four Mile Historic Park and its programs and services to the public as well as interpret site policy and procedures for the visitor
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, and members of the public; exercise tact and diplomacy at all times, and demonstrate an understanding of protocol and sensitivity to cultural diversity issues
  • Willingness to work a varying schedule based on program enrollment; weekend hours will be necessary as well as some evenings and holidays.
  • Reliable transportation required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds
  • While performing the duties of this position, employees are regularly required to reach with hands and arms, speak for extended periods of time, and to listen.
  • Applicant should be able to work outdoors as needed for programming and special events

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

Part-time hours are generally available between 8:00 am – 4:00 pm Monday through Friday, with weekend and evening work required as needed. A flexible schedule will be assigned based on the availability of the candidate and needs of the Park. The rate of pay is $20-$22 per hour.
