Park Animals

PLEASE NOTE: We are a working farm, not a petting zoo!

Do not feed Park animals.

Do not climb on the animal enclosures, enter the enclosures, or open the enclosures.

Only touch the animals when they let you. Keep hands away from animals’ mouths at all times, as they may bite. Even the friendliest animals can mistake fingers for carrots.

Unattended Children Policy

Colorado youth are an important part of the Four Mile Historic Park community. 4MHP encourages children of all ages to visit the Park and Museum, enjoy our educational programs, learn, ask questions, and become lifelong history and cultural advocates. Youth and their parents/guardians must respect the rights of other Park and Museum visitors and behave accordingly. 4MHP staff members are not child care providers and will not be responsible for monitoring behavior.

Public places, including parks, may not be safe places for unsupervised youth.

Parents/guardians are expected to supervise their children’s visit to 4MHP. 4MHP cannot assume responsibility for individuals left unattended on Park and Museum premises. In order to prevent undue disruption of normal 4MHP activities, provide for the general welfare of all persons using the Park and Museum and for the safety of youth visiting 4MHP, the following policy has been adopted.

  1. Children 11 years old or younger shall be attended and adequately supervised by a parent or other responsible person. A child under age 12 should not have the responsibility to supervise younger children.
  2. Persons responsible for individuals who have special needs shall remain with them at all times.
  3. If a child has been left alone; there are situations indicating problems with unattended children; or any child or vulnerable minor (under 16) is left at closing time, 4MHP staff person in charge will attempt to contact the child’s parent(s) or legal guardian(s) 15 minutes and 30 minutes after closing time. If no one has arrived to pick up the child after 30 minutes, the police will be called.

Lost & Found

Visitors often leave their property at 4MHP, then return to attempt to recover it. While 4MHP is not responsible for personal items left on the premises, a reasonable attempt will be made to return the lost item to its owner and to hold the particular item for a specified period of time before disposal. This policy provides guidelines for addressing this issue. If you have lost an item on the Park, please email info@fourmilepark.org or call 720-865-0800.

Guidelines

The reception desk within Four Mile Historic Park’s Grant Family Education Center serves as a repository of lost and found items on 4MHP premises. Reasonable efforts should be made to determine and notify the owner (including phone calls, email, or a letter to the person’s last known address, if possible).

Depending on the type of item, the property may be held up to 30 days before disposal. While the retention period and manner of disposal depends on the item, most fall into the following table: “High Value” identity items such as wallets, checkbooks, payroll checks, credit/debit cards, driver licenses, ID cards, etc.—held up to 30 days, then returned to an issuing agency or destroyed.

Other “High Value” items such as cell phones, cameras, portable music players, electronics, jewelry, umbrellas, watches, keys, and medications—also held for 30 days, then donated to a local charity (or, as in the case of medications and keys, destroyed).

Hazardous and perishable items may be discarded immediately.

All unclaimed money will be provided to 4MHP’s general operating support fund after 30 days.
